Should Minneapolis Electricians be licensed?

Electricians working in the state of Minnesota are required to be licensed by the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry.

Are there different levels of Licensing?

Yes, there are 3 levels of licensing for Electricians.

  • Apprentice Electrician – Someone new to the trade is considered an Apprentice. Upon 2 years of supervised training and obtaining a passing score on an Electrical exam, they become a Wireman Electrician.
  • Journeyman Electrician – At Sipma Electric, Inc., all of the Electricians we send to your home to work on your electrical system hold this license. To be a Journeyman Electrician, one must complete 8000 hours of work under a Master Electrician and pass a written exam.
  • Master Electrician – A Master Electrician is just that, a Master. All electrical contracting companies MUST have a Master Electrician on board to oversee the electrical work being performed on a daily basis.

Do electrical contractors need to have insurance?

Yes, whether performing commercial electrical services or residential electrical services, all electrical contracting companies must be licensed as an electrical contractor in the state of Minnesota. This is designed to insure customer safety and protection by requiring the licensed electrical company to maintain a minimum general liability insurance policy. It also requires the company to be directly supervised by a licensed Master Electrician.
